Kona 2026 will be Patrick Lange’s final IRONMAN World Championship in Hawai‘i. The German will close one of the defining chapters of his career this Saturday on the island where he became a three-time world champion and one of long-distance triathlon’s great names.
Lange won Kona in 2017, 2018 and 2024. In 2018 he became the first man to break eight hours at the World Championship with 7:52:39. Six years later he returned to claim a third title and set a new course record of 7:35:53.
The marathon as his signature
If one discipline defines Lange, it is the run. On his Kona debut in 2016 he finished third after a 2:39:45 marathon, then a run-course record. At Challenge Roth in 2023 he pushed that ability further with a 2:30:27 marathon, an official long-distance benchmark.
His racing style has often turned the marathon into a chase: limit the damage on the bike and make the run the place where the race changes.
Gran Canaria is part of the story
Lange’s relationship with Gran Canaria was not a one-off. He finished third at Challenge Gran Canaria in 2018, fourth in 2021 and fifth in 2023. In 2018 he arrived in Mogan as reigning world champion and took third behind Pablo Dapena and Andi Bocherer.
He returned to Anfi in 2021 for an exceptional field featuring Jan Frodeno and other major names. Before travelling, Lange said Gran Canaria would be the base for his final preparation ahead of his first race of the season.
He raced there again in 2023 alongside Sam Laidlow, Aaron Royle and Mathis Margirier. At different stages of his career, Gran Canaria became both a racing venue and a training destination for one of long-distance triathlon’s finest runners.
Final Kona, but not the final finish line
Hawai‘i is his farewell to the IRONMAN World Championship, not his immediate retirement. Lange has announced that his professional career will conclude at Challenge Roth in 2027. First comes one final opportunity on the Big Island, the place where much of his legend was built.
