Winning in Kona and ending a racing career in the same weekend. Vincent Luis has announced his retirement from competitive racing at the IRONMAN World Championship awards ceremony. According to Frank Wechsel’s report in tri-mag.de, an emotional Luis said his first appearance at this championship would also be his last.

The farewell follows his Hawaii victory ahead of Gustav Iden and Matthew Marquardt. At 37, the Frenchman has chosen to end his career at the top.

A career that already included two world titles

Kona adds another chapter to a career established well before long-distance racing. His official World Triathlon profile records his 2019 and 2020 world titles, alongside Olympic mixed relay bronze with France at Tokyo 2020.

The first title followed a season decided in Lausanne, with Mario Mola his major rival. A year later, Luis retained the crown in Hamburg. Those milestones put his career in perspective: he had already proved he could remain at the highest level before taking on Hawaii.

Choosing when to finish

From TriSpain’s perspective, the distinctive feature of this farewell is its timing. A victory usually raises questions about the next season, defending a title and pursuing further goals. Here, the story centres on a personal decision: bringing competitive racing to a close after reaching a defining objective.

His announcement offers an image beyond the result itself: a champion able to choose his own departure from professional sport.
