Not every open-water event needs an extreme distance. Galipa Swim stages its eighth edition on 10 October in Zierbena, Bizkaia, with a 2 km main race.
The course sits inside the harbour, protected from waves and currents. Organisers present it as suitable for both first-time open-water swimmers and experienced athletes.
There are male and female starts, a disability category and a 400 m youth event.
